Group vs. Individual Therapy
Group vs. Individual Therapy in Mental Health
When it comes to someone that needs therapy, they will often try to discover if either group or individual therapy is best for them. As one of the top Florida addiction therapy centers available, Counseling of Southwest Florida is extremely well-versed in both therapy methods and their advantages and disadvantages. If you do not know which method is best for you, the following article is the perfect place to start. Continue reading below to learn more about group vs. individual therapy.
Advantages of Group Therapy
Group therapy is one of the most popular counseling and therapy methods because it allows members of the group therapy session to develop communication and socialization skills. Effectively articulating and communicating problems, issues, and emotions is one of the most important aspects of effective recovery. This is much more effective when someone has a group of people that are going through the same experiences and struggles. Another advantage of group therapy is the fact that they function as a safe space for people that are struggling with substance abuse issues to talk. Those in group therapy understand there is usually a policy where nothing gets leaked from the safe space. This allows for a feeling of support that is not usually achieved with individual therapy sessions.
Group Therapy Disadvantages
There are some disadvantages to group therapy. This includes some feelings of discomfort that accompanies opening up about deep trauma to a group of relatively unknown people. This could be counterproductive because it could dissuade people from participating in group therapy, which would mean that much of the advantages of grief and loss therapy training could be lost because of a lack of participation.
Another disadvantage of group therapy is the fact that sometimes, some personalities will clash, which makes free-flowing conversation harder to achieve. Since open discussion is encouraged in group therapy, it could lead to many people not getting along with other members of the group and causing tension and awkwardness with the other participants in the therapy session.
Benefits of Individual Therapy
Does group therapy work for everyone? There are some people who would prefer a more individualized approach to their counseling. One of the benefits of individual therapy for addiction is the fact that Individual therapy gives more focus on someone’s individual struggles than a group therapy session. Since group therapy focuses on participants opening up to strangers, it could cause a good deal of anxiety since they do not have a lot of established trust with the other people in the therapy session. By having an established authority figure, more trust is established between the person in therapy and the professional. This could lead to more self-exploration and improved communication skills.
