Celebrate World Humanitarian Day
If you want to celebrate World Humanitarian Day, mark your calendar for Friday, August 19th. The United Nations (UN) General Assembly founded this day in 2009 as a way to honor humanitarians across the globe.1 But the day does more than recognize workers who care for the benefit of others. It also reminds us of the many aid workers, volunteers, and others contributing to making life safer and easier. Below, Counseling of Southwest Florida talks about humanitarianism and getting involved.
Famous Humanitarians
You don’t have to be famous to be a good humanitarian. However, there are many famous humanitarians that you have probably heard of. Names such as Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela probably come to mind when you think of good. But in today’s modern world, more influential people use their notoriety to help do good. Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, and Richard Branson might be best known for their investing, starting Microsoft, and founding Virgin Group, respectively. But these three are also well-known for how they have and continue to aid humanity.
How to Celebrate World Humanitarian Day
If you are looking for how to celebrate World Humanitarian Day or other ways you can observe, here are some easy ways to get involved.
- Volunteer – Few things feel better than doing something for someone else without expecting anything in return. One way you can volunteer is by helping the homeless by spending time assisting a soup kitchen or at a shelter.
- Donate – Donations are needed by many people. It’s not just the homeless who are in need. Many people get temporarily displaced or have unexpected emergencies and could also use some assistance. You can donate money, clothing, and food, which will all be used and appreciated equally.
- Practice a Random Act of Kindness – There are many easy ways to practice kindness. A few simple ways include baking and donating cookies to a senior living facility, paying for a stranger’s morning coffee, or picking up litter from the beach.
Humanitarians Come in All Shapes and Sizes
You might not have made the biggest humanitarian efforts yet, but there is no time like the present to get started. Whether your contributions are big or small, your efforts to help others will not go unnoticed.
What if you aren’t ready to contribute as a humanitarian because you are facing your own obstacles? Sometimes we have to help ourselves before we are ready to help others, and that is okay.
